Glen Belvis is a seasoned litigator who represents clients in numerous bench and jury trials, as well as ITC cases, appeals before the Federal Circuit and alternative dispute resolutions. He has served as lead counsel in numerous ANDA litigations, biotechnology patent interferences, and other patent and trade secret bench and jury trials. He has participated in several multinational litigations involving related patent lawsuits in the UK, Europe, Asia, Canada, and the United States.
Glen has litigated cases valued in excess of 1 billion dollars and prosecuted more than 500 patent applications.
Glen has more than 30 years of practice in all facets of intellectual property law including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and related antitrust matters in a wide range of technologies including ceramics, semi-conductors, deep-sea drilling, oil field services and downhole tools, hydraulic fracturing, mining, bio-technology, software, Internet, factory automation, optics, high power lasers, medical lasers including laser eye surgery, polymers, heavy equipment, and pharmaceuticals.
Glen was an equity partner at Brink Hofer, a premier IP Boutique for 25 years, before becoming Chief IP Counsel for Foro Energy, a start-up company developing high power laser transmission and delivery technologies for applications in the exploration and production of natural resources including hydrocarbons and geothermal energy. While at Foro he was instrumental in developing and implementing an extensive IP strategy, which is the subject of a Harvard Business School case study. He also managed and addressed the intellectual property aspects of the company's multi-million dollar DOE/ARPA-E grant and is experienced in all aspects of the Bayh-Dole Act.
Glen moved back to private practice where he was privileged to be an equity partner at Steptoe & Johnson for four years. During that time Glen was lead counsel on several medical device litigations, and continued working with Foro and other disruptive technology start-up companies. While at Steptoe, Glen also served as the Chief IP Counsel for Melior Innovations, and presently holds that position. Melior Innovations is a disruptive technology company developing new materials, new technologies and operating companies to bring those innovations to the public.
Calling upon his business and litigation experience, Glen saw the opportunity to bring greater value to his clients through the founding of his own law firm.
Glen is the author of Intellectual Property in BusinessTransactions: Protecting the Competitive Advantage (ALM 2010-14), a treatise discussing many of his strategies for IP harvesting, development and enforcement. He also the author of two chapters in the 2017 ICCLE Intellectual Property Law Handbook addressing patent misuse, inequitable conduct, antitrust and the attorney-client privilege.
Glen has testified as an expert witness on patent and trade secret matters in US and foreign litigations and has lectured on patent related matters at Oxford University, the University of Illinois and Peking University. He is a Master in the Richard Linn in of Court and former member of the Congress of Fellows of the Center for International Legal Studies and Chairperson of the DePaul LaAuthor, Speaker & ExpertAuthor, Speaker & ExpertLaw School IP Advisory Board.
Glen obtained a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1980 and a J.D. from the University of DePaul Law School in 1985. While at DePaul, Mr. Belvis served as an editor of the law review and received the West Publishing Company Hornbook Award, which is presented to the student having the highest academic average in class. He also served as an extern for the Honorable William J. Bauer, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
